About Allison Copening

Representing Senate District 6 in Clark County, Allison Copening is a third-generation Las Vegan, a successful business entrepreneur, and an advocate for residents of Southern Nevada.  She was elected into the Nevada State Senate in November, 2008. In the 2009 session, she served on the Committee on Commerce and Labor, the Committee on Judiciary, and the Committee on Natural Resources.

Senator Copening was born in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 4, 1964. After graduating from Bonanza High School in 1982, she attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she received a B.A. in Communication Studies. From there, she began a career in broadcasting at the CBS affiliate in Las Vegas, KLAS TV, where she worked for nine years.

Senator Copening has an extensive business background. She founded and operated a full-service marketing and public relations agency and in 1998 she was named a "Top 40 under 40" recipient by the Las Vegas Business Press.  She then moved on to work with Pulte Homes/ Del Webb as the Director of Public Affairs. After four years, she left Pulte Homes to help open the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, a 180-acre cultural and historical attraction celebrating the birthplace of Las Vegas. She resigned from the Las Vegas Valley Water District on March 2007 to run for office and is currently focusing on legislative affairs over the summer before she returns to full-time work.

Senator Copening has served as a volunteer and board member of many organizations including the Desert Research Institute Research Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Kids Voting Nevada and Corporate Volunteer Council. Currently, she is a board member for Child Focus, an organization that serves children living in the State foster care system.

On a personal level, Senator Copening is a breast cancer survivor since 2005 and in 2008, lost her brother, Michael, to melanoma.  Devastating loss for her and her family, Senator Copening sponsored a resolution declaring the second week in May as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Week in Nevada in hopes to draw attention to the devastating disease.

Senator Copening is a member of Canyon Ridge Christian Church. Her mother and father, Jane and Harold, live in Las Vegas as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. In her spare time, Senator Copening enjoys spending time with family and friends, volunteering, biking and reading.
